Nearly ten years since its last reauthorization, Congress has renewed the Older American’s Act for an additional three years. In addition to maintaining the core components of the original Act, this reauthorization will allow for increased spending in programs benefiting senior citizens, with funding allocation increasing 6% over the next three years.
Among other provisions, the bill will also maintain federal funding for meal delivery programs while putting more emphasis on nutrition, calls for improved training and screening to prevent elder abuse, and create additional support for modernizing senior centers.
With its passage in Congress, the bill now goes to President Obama for his signature, who called for its reauthorization at the 2015 White House Conference on Aging. The bill’s next renewal is already in the works, which is expected to come as the youngest of the baby boomer generation reach the age of 55.
