One of the most persistent myths in the dieting universe is that you can lose weight if you eat only foods that have negative calories. Scientists say: there is no such a thing.
What are ‘negative calorie’ foods?
The idea behind the negative calorie foods came from the fact that some foods are more difficult to digest. The less processed the food is, and the more fiber it contains, the more calories it takes to digest it. But, the problem is that every single food item contains more calories in it than it is needed to digest it. Digestion requires very little energy, even if it sounds like there is a battle going on in your tummy (that is probably just gass).
Let’s take celery. It is the most famous negative calorie food. A cup of chopped celery stalks contains 19 calories only. But, your body needs only 2 of those calories to digest celery. So, you do not have negative calorie celery, but you do get fiber, calcium, vitamins B6, A and C. Not a bad deal after all.
Not negative but still good
One great thing about ” Ëœnegative calorie diet” â„¢ is that it consists mostly of fruits and vegetables. Grapefruit, Lemons, Limes, Apples, Pineapple, Oranges, Asparagus, Lettuce, Celery, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Beets, Onions, Cucumber, Zucchini, Raspberries, Strawberries are all listed as negative calorie foods. All of them are an excellent addition to a healthy diet. Fruits and vegetables are rich in dietary fiber, which makes you feel full with a small quantity of food. Remember how long you can go without feeling for a snack if your lunch consisted of a nice mixed salad? By adding fruits and vegetables to every meal, you can make the meal smaller because small quantity will make you feel full. And that sounds like a great diet plan.
If you really want to consume some zero calorie food, drink a lot of water. Water will also help your digestion and re-hydrate your cells, making your skin glow.
It is difficult not to fall for all that media is throwing at us about various weight loss miracles. Next time you read about the new dieting secret, just remember that, according to the Market Data Enterprise Inc., the diet industry is worth between $40 and $100 billion. It is their job to sell you various diet products and snake oils. Your job is to make sure that your nutrition is balanced, rich in fresh produce, and that you spend at least half hour every day moving, in any way you like. Dancing and sex are also moving, right? They also spend much more calories than negative calorie foods.
